License Renewals

Renewing your Operator’s License

At the time of renewal, which must be done in person, a temporary driver’s license, which is valid for 30 days, will be issued stating that your driver’s license is in the process of being printed. Your new Driver’s License will then be mailed to your home address in 2 – 3 weeks.

It should be noted that the temporary driver’s license is not valid as a proof of identity.

Additional documentation such as a medical examination and or visual referral may be required in some circumstances.

Replacement License

Replacement Licenses

If your current driver’s license has been lost, stolen or destroyed, you’ll probably need to obtain a duplicate.

For your duplicate license, the original photograph will be used (new photographs are not permitted) and mailed to your home address within 2 – 3 weeks.

While you are waiting for your replacement license, a temporary license will be issued which unfortunately is not acceptable as proof of identity.

Graduated Licensing

Graduated Driver License

The 3 stages of the Graduated Driver License Program ensure that new drivers get the support, experience and skill required for the involved responsibility of driving on today’s roads.

Stage 1:  Learner (Class 7)

To order to obtain a Learner’s License (Class 7) you must:

  • Be 14 years of age or older.
  • Pass a vision test & a knowledge test about the rules of the road.
  • Have a parent present if you are under 18 years of age.
  • Have valid identification.

The first step in obtaining your Class 7 drivers license is to take the written examination. Come into our office, at least 30 minutes before closing, with one piece of valid government identification and answer 30, multiple choice questions.

Once you have passed the written exam, & subsequent eye examination we can issue you with a class 7 licence card.

 

Conditions for the holder of a class 7 learner licence.

Must hold the (Class 7) Learners license for at least 1 year

Must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver that is not a probationary driver who is 18 years of age or older and is seated next to the driver.

Learners are not permitted to drive from midnight to 5am

Not permitted to have more passengers than seat belts

Only 8 demerit points are allowed for learners drivers

Have a zero alcohol level

If you are learning to drive a motorcycle, you must be 16 years of age and are not permitted to drive during night time hours. You must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver who is 18 years of age or older and is either seated on the motorcycle with you or is following you in or on another motor vehicle.

 

Stage 2:  Probationary (Class 5)

To order to become a Probationary Driver (Class 5-GDL) you must:

  • Be 16 years of age or older.
  • Have held a Class 7 licence for at least 1 year.
  • Pass the standard Class 5 road test.

If you are ready apply for your Class 5, probationary licence, book your test online. Most drivers provide their own vehicle for the road test but we now have a rental car available if required.

 

Stage 3:  Non-Probationary (Class 5)

To become a fully licensed (Class 5) driver you must:

  • Have been suspension free for the last year of the 2-year Probationary Stage.
  • Pass an advanced road test.

Following your 2 year probationary period, you should have the necessary skill and experience to take part 2 of the road test examination which is more advanced that part 1. If you are ready to try for your full licence, book your test online. Most drivers provide their own vehicle for the road test but we now have a rental car available if required.

Once you have successfully completed the advanced road test, come into Ardiel Agencies to have your probationary licence reclassified and replaced with a full Class 5 driver’s licence.

Drivers Abstract

A Driver’s Abstract is your driving history for the previous 3, 5 or 10 years, showing all suspensions and tickets (excluding multi nova & parking) that have occurred on your Alberta issued driving license.

Three years after the conviction date, the suspension or conviction does not appear unless you have requested a 5 or 10 year abstract, at which point it will give a complete history, including previously dropped convictions.

To obtain a drivers abstract, simply come into the offices of Ardiel Agencies in person with valid identification.

To obtain an Alberta drivers abstract if you are currently out of province:

  • Download and complete a Driver Abstract Consent authorizing a person to obtain your drivers abstract on your behalf.
  • Request that the person come into Ardiel Agencies with the completed form and we will be happy to process the application.

Alberta Transportation is at liberty to demand a medical exam at any age to determine an individuals medical fitness to operate a motor vehicle. All license terms are dependent on established medical guidelines and apply to all classes of licenses.

It is your legal obligation and responsibility to report any disability or disease that may interfere or detract from the safe operation of a motor vehicle.

If you have a medical condition that you or your doctor believes does not require a periodic medical to be completed, please contact Alberta Registries toll free at 310-0000 and speak to a government representative to inquire about the circumstances of your case. (Driver Fitness and Monitoring Branch).
